3D Ripper DX is a software tool for retrieving game geometry, including textures, from DirectX 9 3D games. How does it work and what can it be used for?


3D Ripper DX is the brainchild of Ukrainian-born Roman Lux, an expert programmer at Deep Shadows. 3D Ripper DX is designed to extract the 3D geometry from computer games that run using DirectX 9 (as opposed to OpenGL).

3D Ripper DX works by intercepting the frame buffer during the runtime of a DirectX-driven game. In other words, the software captures geometry data from the game engine as it passes to the graphics card and stores the render information of each frame call.
Export to 3DS or Export to OBJ

Game geometry captured by 3D Ripper DX can be exported into 3D Studio Max using the proprietary 3DS format. Alternatively, the 3D models can be exported into any other 3D polygon modeling software using the OBJ format.

Along with the game geometry, any assigned textures and shaders will also be extracted and applied when the stored data is exported.

This free ripper software allows the aspiring 3D modeler to examine professionally optimized terrain and character meshes, and its uses as an educational tool are therefore quite profound. However, the most practical use of 3D Ripper DX will be for the game modding community.
Ideal For the Game Modding Community

Game modding has become ubiquitous with a computer games lasting playability, and more and more game companies such as CryTek, Valve Software and Epic Games include level editors, scripting guides and extensive documentation on how to modify a game.

Such modifications, or “mods”, might include simple alterations, such as the inclusion of new weapons or new levels to play, through to partial or complete reworkings that apply new themes to the game, usually through the application of totally different game geometry and art assets throughout.

And this is where 3D Ripper DX shines. Model geometry and textures from one game can be extracted, re-rigged in 3D Studio Max or other 3D modeling software, and imported into another game that supports mods. For example, using 3D Ripper DX, Lara Croft could take to the streets of San Andreas. Or Jill Valentine from the Resident Evil games could be used as a player avatar in UnReal Tournament. The possibilities are endless.
3D Ripper DX Limitations

3D Ripper DX only supports DirectX applications, and does not support DirectX versions earlier than 9. While this tool will extract all level geometry and character model geometry, including assigned textures, any bone or animation information will not be captured.

It should also be emphasized that re-use of copyright protected game assets in any releases made available to the general public, whether for sale, or for free, is theft, and as such this technique should only be used where the game, and all its assets have been placed in the public domain explicitly by the publisher or author, or where permission has been given to do so.
